ASU Preview!

ASU Week Preview

The trip to the desert to face the ASU Sun Devils is always a challenge, but that daunting task is always magnified when their coach can’t read. Sparky and his wild band of STD riddled students will be fired up for a night game where they have been requested to black out. This obviously leads to the initial reaction of, “Do we really need to request ASU students and alumni to black out for a game?”

If you come across Sparky in the parking lot, please avoid eye contact.

OFFENSE

This is, without question, the most talented offense UW has faced so far. Demario Richard, Kalen Ballage, and N’Keal Harry are all talented playmakers; and all of them were close to going to Washington (DAMNIT N’KEAL). In looking at their season stats however it is a bit surprising to see they have struggled on offense, especially in the run game, which hints that the offensive line may be an issue for them.

On the season ASU is averaging just 3.05 yards per carry, ranking 11th in the conference behind only Cal (still too high). For as explosive as Ballage is he is only averaging slightly over 4 yards per carry. And ASU hasn’t exactly faced a murderers row of defenses this season.

The passing game, on the other hand, has been very solid with Manny Wilkins. ASU leads the league in yards per attempt at 8.9, but even with that great number they have only scored 9 TD’s through the air. The real concern is the OL for ASU. As evidenced by the lack of production at RB, their line has really struggled. They have already given up 22 sacks in just five games, only Cal and WSU have been worse this year and both of those teams have played six games.

DEFENSE

Their defense has been riddled with injuries and attrition, when you get a WR back from an injury suffered earlier this season and immediately try him out at DB, you know you have issues. They have also lost perhaps their best defensive player in Koron Krump (OLB) to injury.

The defensive backs have been truly terrible. They have given up 7.9 yards per attempt through the air so far this season, 11th in the PAC12, only OSU is worse. And in doing so they have given up 14 TD’s and have only grabbed 2 interceptions.
Unfortunately for defensive specialist Todd Graham, the news doesn’t get much better for the run defense. ASU is giving up 5.78 yards per rush, only UCLA is worse, and ASU is nearly one whole yard worse than 10th place in the PAC12 (OSU) in this category.

The big concern is their ultra-aggressive blitz packages versus Jake Browning. Can UW withstand the storm and stay patient in the run game and work quick passes to defeat the blitz. Taking shots can, and will work, but hopefully only after we have established our run game a bit.

DATA

ASU has serious attrition issues now, and going forward. At nearly 30% attrition they are in the bottom fourth of the PAC12. Their 2014 and 2015 classes are already both over 30% attrition, with the 2015 class at a staggering 39% with 2 more seasons of eligibility to go.

This is the most talented team UW has faced so far. Since 2013 ASU has signed 29 4* or better players, and on their active roster they have 25 4*. For comparison UW is at 38 and 28 respectively.
