Washington men’s basketball coach Mike Hopkins secured a verbal commitment on Saturday afternoon from three-star 2018 recruit Jamal Bey.

The 6-foot-6 small forward is a Las Vegas native who plays at Bishop Gorman High in Nevada. He received offers from Utah, Arizona State, USC, UNLV, San Diego State and TCU.

Bey is the newest addition to Washington’s 2018 class who joins four-star recruit Elijah Hardy, 6-2 and 161-pound point guard, and four-star prospect Ed Chang, a 6-7, 180-pound forward who transferred from Nebraska and will play at Garfield.

Bey averaged 18.0 points in 16 games as a junior at Bishop Gorman last season. He shot 46.2 percent from the field, including 87.5 percent (14 of 16) on three-pointers and was 12 of 18 (66.7 percent) on free throws.

“Jamal gives Washington a long, athletic two way guard,” Bishop Gorman coach Grant Rice told Scout.com, which was first to report the news of Bey’s commitment. “Can defend the one through three and is a very underrated shooter especially off the one dribble pull up.

“Jamal is a perfect fit for Washington the way Coach Hop wants Washington to play.”
