the democrats represent a broad coalition (blacks, immigrants, poor/working class, LGBT, environmentalists) so naturally they represent the interests of that coalition. the republicans represent white (usually christian) men and to a lesser extent white women. so naturally they represent the interests of white Christians.
it's really not that hard to figure out.
I'm not saying college campuses isn't a problem, it is. but pandering to identity politics isn't a problem that exists solely on the left. it's just as strong on the right.
Points taken except for that last part. I think the Dems are in a much deeper hole than the R's right now. And I think it's going to get worse before it gets better. When 51% or more compete for who is the most oppressed group, you have yourself a major fault line in the electorate. And they will turn on each other, as witnessed and demonstrated, long before Trump or R's create a target-rich environment.

everyone plays identity politics. in general, and especially in the united states it's all tribal.
Most R's play it by identifying how fat your wallet is. Simpler, more predictable. Easier game for most to play. And honest about the fact that 99% of people would sell their skin color in a heartbeat to be rich instead.
