Either the radar/sonar was fucked up (insanely possible), the navigation systems were hacked, or it was blatant sabotage.

Whatever it was, a lack of training isn't within 5,000 miles of the cause.

Most radar maintenance is done at the depot level by civilians under warranty work. Lack of retention in the 04-08 timeline forced DoD to switch to this. In most, not all, but most cases the only thing intricate they would be allowed to do is calibration which is dummy proof by design.

So yes, it could be a lack of training but not from someone in a uniform and certainly no one on that ship.
