The big 5 have their bowl tie-ins for their champion (so the conf championship means something), then get your 3 at large teams based on committee ranking and play the four major bowls. This year it would be like this:
ROSE (P10 v B10): UW vs. PSU (4-5)
ORANGE (ACC v BXII): CLEM vs. OKLA (2-7)
SUGAR (SEC v AL1): BAMA vs. tOSU (1-3)
COTTON (AL2 v AL3): MICH vs. USC (6-9)
(would be a stipulation that the higher seed team is 'in' and can't play a team they've already played as that part of the 'playoff' has already been performed)
Then, following the new year's day awesome bowl games with traditions like throwing oranges or holding roses, you have the committee that did the first ranking simply re-rank after they see each team vs. a good OOC opponent.
So now, the traditions mean something, the conference championships mean something and we have one more really good piece of data before the final rankings. Basically just the way it is now, except for you preserve all the good shit about college football and get rid of this fuckery that de-values the conference games, ruins the bowl traditions and basically fucks the whole first month of college football.
Play the natty 2 weeks after J1 so people have time to book flights and shit as well.
If you are going to have a poll decide things (which is the only real way CFB will ever be decided and keep the bowls), let's not fuck up the whole fucking season (as has happened this time) for that.
Also, after a win in the Rose Bowl, if we get left out: fuck it. It's not that bad, you go out on a high note. And if we lose the Rose, then we didn't deserve a shot at Bama anyway.

11 team playoff
Each P5 conference champion gets automatic bid and a "bye" week
Week 1: 6 at large teams play each other for the remaining 3 spots in what reshuffles to an 8 team playoff.
Week 2: First 8 team round is played at higher seed home field.
Week 3: Final 4 at neutral location
Week 4: Final Championship in Las Vegas
All eligible teams must play at least 9 conference games. 2 non conference games allowed, one of which must be against another power 5 conference member, no scheduling of FCS opponents.
Non power 5 schools that go undefeated (like western Michigan this year) will receive the lowest available seed in the 6 at large play in game unless ranked high enough to make the tournament on their own. -

the whole point of the playoff system was to sorta make sure that all the top 4 "ranked" teams had a chance to win instead of just relying on rankings when they didn't play each other.
the top 4 teams are now playing in a playoff...it works as intended.
only people whose favorite team finished #5 or lower believe they should have a chance...big fucking deal. if you let more in, then the next batch will want in.

Its amazing how big a sandy v the east coast gets when they don't get enough.
Simple solution.
Big 12 implodes and teams scatter. NCAA is left with:
4 Main conferences with 12-16 teams per conference.
2 sub-conferences in each conference
(screw ND and the peons...if they are good enough they can jump into one of the main conferences or they can play a "major" bowl against one of the losers).
Conference Championship becomes Quarterfinals
Semifinals and finals as-is with the remaining bowels for those not still in it.
And I'd get rid of the ranking and just do it by region...i.e. the West Coast Semi is played in Phoenix/Las Vegas/Dallas/etc, and the east coast region is Atlanta/DC/Miami/etc. to make it easier for fans to get to.
And best part about it would be that it would put Willingham out of a job again.

Who wants to hear about which 3-loss team would be in the playoffs? Colorado or Florida State or Louisville or Auburn or Wisconsin? All those teams had opportunities against playoff teams and lost.
8 teams with conf champs auto and three at large would be perfect.
In essence it makes all the conf champ games and additional playoff game bringing it to 13 teams. -

The 4 team playoff is extra fucktarded when you have 5 power conferences and Notre Dame that can have a 12-1 season every once in a while. Almost every year there is going to be a team or two that is left out that could have likely won it all. Just include them and get rid of a pointless non conference team everyone plays. -

I think the system where you keep the traditional tie-ins and play them as quarterfinals is the most realistic solution
