I re-watched the game...painful as it was.
Anyway, it's startling how much jonathan smith got out-coached in that game. The offense was so unimaginative and showed a complete unwillingness to adapt.
usc kept a safety back to protect against John Ross catching deep passes. Plus Jake was under constant pressure from usc's superior DL AND creative blitzing.
So where were the crisp short passes (5-7 yards) that would've allowed Jake to get rid of the ball quickly and force usc to adjust their defense? Allowing our WRs and TEs to find the open space and sit for 5 yard gains was the obvious answer, but there was none of it. Moreover, there were no routes for the RBs to come out of the backfield, covered by a LB, and sit in the middle 5 yards past the line of scrimmage. No quick button hooks, out patterns, or dragging across the middle. Nothing.
Instead we saw these long fade patters that allowed adoree jackson and their safety plenty of time to blanket our WR.
Babushka should NOT have his contract extended. This was a complete failure to adapt and effectively game plan.
And fuck Pete for his constant emphasis on "explosive plays." Sometimes you take what the defense gives you, and whatever will keep your QB upright.

The offense became accustomed to everything coming easy.
Even in the close games, it wasn't hard. Coleman had 185 yards against Arizona. Utah couldn't stop the run all game.
They folded against USC because it wasn't easy. The running game isn't getting 6 yards per carry? Let's chuck it deep every other play.
The only possible defense of Smith/Petersen is that Browning chose to go deep as often as he did. -
This. They just kept trying the same shit that worked against stanford and oregon. It was almost as if they were throwing a tantrum: "Wait a minute! This is supposed to work! What's happening? This isn't fair! WAH WAH WAH!"RoadDawg55 said:The offense became accustomed to everything coming easy.

We game planned as if we have superior talent to USC. Which we don't. Pete knows better and we should have come in with a vastly different game plan on both sides if the ball. Had to blitz to get pressure at Cal. Why didn't we come out rushing 6 on play one?
You know, create an element of surprise. -
USC had a brilliant passing attack. All sorts of routes. We got out played and out coached.

There were short crossing patterns underneath deeper crossing patterns, LBs kept jumping underneath, Safties to late to recognize. Rapp and JoJo were abused... especially JoJo. The TD late was a joke. The safeties let him get behind them in the endzone. Awful. 3 guys watched him.RaceBannon said:USC had a brilliant passing attack. All sorts of routes. Babushka should study Josh McDaniels. Fuck that guy knows how to play call against superior defenses while dealing with a poor offensive line.. and he utilizes TEs and short routes.

Disagree on one point: Adapt Smiff did - by Doubling-Down on what wasn't working.Passion said:Well, I watched large portions of it.

Aside from that, this poast is simply zipper destroying. -
If you want to torture yourself, just watch the drive that ended in a blocked FG.
1st down Gaskin gets four yards for 2nd and 6. Then a shit pass play resulting in a hold.
Fuller gets 14 yards back on 2nd & 16 with a pass over the middle. It's 3rd & 2. Then john Smith dials up dreck only john knows how.
John got licked straight up. It's in Pete!
Also, anyone notice Dissly! What a grab. That route was there all night. -

I wonder what subject will dominate this week's Husky Fan Podcast?
Roady should be a special guest this week, although you could just cut and paste from play one of many from last year's shows, and it would apply just the same.
