"Explosive Play" Pete comment

In the post game press conf, Pete said he thought it would be a low scoring game, and we didn't hit enough explosive plays to get it done.

When I hear stuff like that, (and is something both him and JS have talked about since they've been here) I want to drink a gallon of mercury as they seem imo to be hung up on that.

If that's how you feel then

#1) You better recruit a qb who can throw it over 40 yards and hit the wr in stride (not Jake's strong suit)
#2) Have a rb with elite, home run speed (not who Gaskin is)
#3) Recruit a wr every year who can run sub 4.3 like Ross
#4) Not recruit a bunch of 6-3 Stringfellow size guys who can go over the middle and make catches like this wr class is

The better team won tonight, but this offense has been so good at grinding it down the field on teams via run and the short/intermediate passing game, yet it feels like JS doesn't believe we can win unless there's 2-4 of those type plays a game and he is going to keep calling them until he gets there.

There is a reason the completion percentage on go routes (or bombs as they were called back in the day) is around 20%.

Look to how the Saints beat the Seahawks as a perfect example.

The explosive plays will are great but tend to happen organically if you chip away a defense (like SC did) but JSfs persists in trying to make them happen.

Feels like watching Sark call plays but without the bubble screens. Not using the options you have open, ignoring the short passes and trying to go long into double coverage.

@Dennis_DeYoung said it perfectly in the game thread last night. Explosive plays are correlative, not causal.

Or you could just hire a real OC.

He's not wrong in the sense that we simply missed a large amount of explosive plays last night. WRs were getting open deep and Jake either missed them or they didn't sell out to catch the ball. But there was no reason for us to rely on those throws all game to begin with. Our tendency to get cute finally caught up with us and bit us in the ass. Sometimes we need to have a little more David Shaw in our gameplan and just fuck the defense in the ass when they know it's coming.

Up vote on tendency to get cute quote. Missing go routes vs. Cal/Rutgers/etc no big deal. Last night they killed us. I believe this team's offensive calling card could be their ability to run it, but gun to head, we are a pass first team who is in love with the notion that explosive plays HAVE to be part of the game plan.
