I would argue its more the perception that he was potentially indicated as a possible source of the leaks and the chilling effect it has on like minded whistle-blowers to provide evidence when a suspicious murder goes unmentioned.

Why does Assange need to protect a dead source? Either Rich gave Wikileaks the fucking documents or he didn't.

If Rich was the source, and was murdered, Assange helps protect future possible leakers by helping expose the conspiracy that he implies whacked Rich.
