Socialism is the government control of business property. Socialistic view is to have complete control of the production of consumers goods and services.

Communism on the other hand is government control of the production of consumer goods and services, and control of the private ownership of these said goods and services. Basically, you don't own anything, as everything is owned by the government, thus completely abolishing socioeconomic classes, except for the extreme wealthy who have authority.

Socialism is a necessary step from capitalism to communism. However, some countries like the former Soviet Union get to full communism, while some do not.

It only takes a select few in high power to corrupt a fully socialistic country into communism, which is why socialistic countries are fragile. All it takes is a deep recession or depression to fuel this corruption. This is why socialism is viewed poorly, and rightfully so.

To put it more simply:

Socialistic governments create the goods and services you own, and communistic governments create the goods and services you rent.

I say that in real life practice they are one in the same. A privileged few control everything and they then commence snuffing out anyone that disagrees and exterminating the educated. It has never worked and never will.
