Gravitational Waves Observed

Gravitational waves were recently detected by scientists, which is a huge step forward for astronomy. Gravitational waves are ripples in the fabric of spacetime that move outward from a source. They were predicted in Einstein's General Theory of Relativity in 1916 but have never been directly observed.

This observation is important for a number of reasons:
- It confirms parts of the general theory of relativity
- It gives us new information about black holes
- maybe most importantly - it gives us a new way to measure space. What this means - almost all of astronomy is carried out by measuring light (electromagnetic radiation). This can be in the form of visible light, infared light, radio, gamma rays (radiation), x-rays, Ossai, etc. If astronomers can now use gravitational waves to help observe space, it opens up new ways to overcome challenges. It could be the dawn of a new era for astronomy.
