Lowering The Boom

New offer out for a Lone Star State Buck. Looks like he's around 6'3" 210 so he'll definitely need a RS year but hopefully can get up to a good 6'3" 230-240 lbs by the time he's a RS-Frosh in fall of 2017:

It seems like half the defenders we are taking are Buck position guys. Potatoe is now being groomed for Buck to go along with Sterk, Rice, and possibly Warren. Wonder how many Bucks we will take this year

BUCK is the most verstile position on the defense, so it'll require the most exceptional players as we saw what Kikaha did last year. They want it to be a position that can rush the passer, drop into coverage against TEs or even slot receivers, cover the flat, and provide run support.

By taking so many BUCKs, they're able to see which of these athletes fits this mold and which ones are in the best shape to play the position. I don't mind seeing them take 3-4 BUCKs each year if it means they'll find the best one and the others filter out to DE or OLB or MLB.

I don't see Potoa'e playing Buck. Maybe he starts out there in his RS year but he's got the frame to be a versatile / 3-down DL.

I'd love to get Boom after watching some of his highlights. Now that we've been stacking Bucks, he doesn't have to play early and can enter the rotation as a RS-Soph, hopefully around 235 - 240 lbs. If not, he can move to SLB...he showed good ability for a JR in HS to use his arms / hands to shed blockers and make tackles.

i dont think potatoe plays buck he is already 265 and one has to assume once he meets dr feelgood he will add another 25 pounds. I hope he is better than his brother

Many people saw Potoae moving inside as a 3-tech. I know that's how UCLA envisioned him when they recruited him. He's already 265 and Samoan...he could easily hit 300 in less than a year.

Choate seems to like a big, physical DL rather than Holt/Wilcox who focused on smaller, quicker DL. We noticed the transition right away when Hudson, who was a DT under Wilcox, became a DE under Choate, and Kikaha, who was the DE, moved to BUCK, and Littleton, who was the RUSH, went to OLB.

Dissly will probably be our starting DE this year at 275, if not 280 or 285 after another year in the weight room. Mathis is the current BUCK at 250, Tupou is 293 at DT and Qualls is NT at 305. I see Potoae gaining weight and moving into the Dissly range and playing DE... but considering how athletic he is, I wouldn't be surprised to see him at BUCK at 275 if he can fulfill the coverage requirements against TEs.

I'm also looking forward to Jaylen Johnson taking off his RS. He's up to 266 lbs and should figure into the rotation since he can provide some pass rush from a DE spot.

Here's my recruiting excitement calculus algorithm:

    General Adds:

    +1 for AfAm (#blacklivesmatter).
    +1 for other P12 offers.
    +1 for UCLA/Nebraska/Notre Dame offer.
    +1 for lineman
+1 for in-state (we have a better shot, plus I hate Californians on principle)
    +2 for USC/Oregon/Bama offer.

    Position specific Adds:
+1 for RBs over 5-10, 190 (sorry Chico)
+1 for QBs who can play (sorry Max Gilliam)
    +1 for RB/WR/DBs with 10.9 and under 100m times
