Reagan was always the favorite of the conservative money and had been being groomed since the 60's.
After his near victory in 76 he was the front runner coming into 1980. Bush never polled well in the south, and once Reagan took out Connally, a Texan, he was well on his way.
Reagan was a well financed, well groomed candidate who was the odds on favorite starting in 1977. -

It is easy to look back now and say when the junior Senator from Illinois who had been in office for 2 years would coast to an easy win.
However, Hillary had been the front runner. It was the design of the primaries that allowed Obama to win.
You need to take a look at the way the GOP has structured the primaries to prevent the same drag on results we had in 2012. -
