Beating Oregon

The biggest mistake defenses make with Oregon is that they get inpatient and ultra aggressive. The way to beat Oregon, is the similar model the Oregon defense used on Florida State. Let Oregon pick up 5 yards on the quick screen, 6 yards on the tight end out, 12 yards on the dig route. Those plays aren't going to kill you. Oregon is one of the most penalized teams in the country. All it takes is a false start or two, a holding penalty, etc and Oregon will get behind the chains. That's when they'll make a mistake or you'll force them to punt. Even if Oregon is flawless on the penalties, they'll still have to score in the red zone when they get there. This has been where Oregon has struggled most often.

If Ohio State forces Oregon into 10-11 play scoring drives Oregon isn't winning this football game. If you go back and visit the Rose Bowl, it was a 25-20 game in the third. What happened next was the classic Oregon scenario. The Ducks ran multiple TE outs to Bayless throughout the game, and the Florida State defense was getting tired of giving up the 5 yards freebie, so they jumped it. Then, oh my, the Ducks run an out and go combo and FSU gets beat 57 yards for a touchdown. The next Oregon drive, they did the same thing with the WR screen. Oregon ran the WR screen all game long for minimal success. But that wasn't good enough for the FSU secondary, so they jumped that too. Then, good bye, the Ducks run a screen and go combo. Carrington scores another long touchdown. Those two plays made a 25-20 game into a 39-20 meltdown. At that point, FSU got completely sloppy and desperate, which will never beat a team like Oregon, and it got completely out of hand.

The Arizona game in Autzen, Oregon's O-line struggled of course, but Arizona also didn't allow Oregon to beat them much over the top. They forced Oregon to have to sustain drives, which Oregon couldn't do effectively. That will be the key to this game. The Ohio State defense needs to be patient, and not worry about giving up yards and first downs. Points are all that matter. Will Ohio State be disciplined enough to do this, I don't know.

I like the Ducks, but I'm more scared about this matchup than I was with Alabama. There's no way the Alabama defense can be patient for 4 full quarters.
