Kikaha Dropping Into Coverage

I hear/see a lot of people that question the dropping of Kikaha into coverage ... and perhaps you can question whether or not we have a better option to drop while letting Kikaha drop. However, the movement of getting Kikaha to drop into the flat yesterday and rushing 3 while mixing in the blitz was IMO what ultimately won us the game and directly led to the Pick 6 from Feeney.

One thing that IMO that a lot of people need to get out of their system is that it's not about individual stats but about the W/L on the scoreboard. It's been a long time in this program that we've had a coach that is more concerned about winning and losing than about making sure that our stats look good.

Perhaps Kikaha isn't great dropping into coverage - but you always have to know where he is if you're the offense. You're going to slide protections over to his side. Then when he drops out to cover the flat and the blitz comes from the other side away from where your protections are, you end up finding a lot of good plays for the defense. That's a great example of how a great player can increase the contributions from other players.

Another good example to watch for is how Shelton will run a stunt with Evan Hudson where Shelton goes and blows up the guy across from Hudson. Hudson loops around and often finds room to come up the middle while Shelton is still able to beat 2 blockers and get into the backfield. Maybe it's easier for Shelton to just blow through and cause pressure ... but if Hudson isn't getting free 1 < 2.
