Screw the offense, I want to talk Defense

1. I have to give a lot of credit to Kawasaki, the defense was much improved today. Despite the fact that they faced several short fields, were stuck on the field for the entire first quarter, they played really well. They had a couple coverage breakdowns that were pretty bad, but that is going to happen occasionally with that many inexperienced guys in the secondary.

2. It was nice to see some different blitzes and stunts up front, and it was nice to see our secondary not get exposed when we blitzed. I was pretty concerned about how vanilla they looked during the scrimmages, so it was reassuring to see some complexity and scheming going on today.

3. We have some serious studs on defense. Shelton, Kikaha, Shaq, and Peters are all in the conversation for best players at their position in the conference, if not the entire country. If the guys around them can just do their jobs and not make huge mistakes, those 4 guys are going to win us some games this year.

4. It was nice to see the young DBs make some nice plays today. Yes, Budda had the bad blown coverage and they took some bad angles, but I think they played respectably overall. Lil Nate Dogg made a great play to break up a pass early in the game, and I think Budda is going to keep getting better as he gains confidence and the game begins to slow down for him. Once he gets to where he is confident enough to cut it loose, I think he's going to remind us of another Seattle area free safety.

5. Not defense related, but I had to come up with a 5th thing to talk about: Korey Durkee was a difference maker today. I've thought he was terrible since the first time I saw him take way too long to hit a crappy punt, but he's improved a lot. He took Ty Montgomery out of the game by himself. His directional kicking was outstanding today, and that one where he let it loose went 65 yards in the air, IIRC. Field position is always important, but especially so in a defensive game, and he really stepped up today.

I'm really disappointed with the result today, but there were a lot of positives on the defensive side of the ball today. If our offense can just be mediocre, which is not an unreasonable expectation, 10+ wins is still very much within reach.
