Winning at Iowa State is really fucking hard
Campbell has done a great job there
There's no question that Campbell wasn't their top choice …
I do think it's fair to question whether Campbell has a National Championship ceiling …
So in that case it's a bit of a risk for Penn St
But IMO he's a superior coach to Franklin, will modernize Penn State's offense/program into the 21st Century, and maintain a relatively high floor for them
Given the circumstances, they could have made a substantially worse hire.
If he can take a leap to the next level it's obviously a home run hire
But I have a hard time seeing him not being at least at a comparable level to Franklin
He was at Iowa St for 10 years …
He had a winning conference record in 8 of those 10 years (at Iowa State) …
He made it to 2 Big12 title games …
The only losing year he had at Iowa State after his 1st season was in 2022 when they lost 6 conference games by 7 or less points …
The biggest challenge/risk for Campbell at Penn St will be how quickly he's able to build up the roster given the lack of recruiting class this year, the risk of the existing Penn St roster following Franklin to VaTech, and what he's able to bring with him to Penn St (notably Rocco Becht). How much they spend on the portal is also a big question mark.
If you look at the schedule for Penn St next year it's very doable to get to the CFP if they actually are able to build out the roster.
