Food for thought

There's a friend of mine who wanted me to pose this question on the website.

With all the money involved now in college football, and all the big money being paid to players who used to be "student athletes", what's wrong with holding the players more accountable now? What's wrong with firing players who aren't playing at the level that was expected?

The coaches are always the ones getting shit canned. But how about holding players accountable too?

That's what the coach gets paid to do

Scholarships are year to year already

I think that’s already happeneing. Half the guys in the portal probably got an NIL pay cut for performance and that’s why they are there.

it’s a good point but I think already happening.

I think we and fans feel more comfortable criticizing players since they are (publicly) paid beyond a scholarship.

I actually think coaches starting to nudge guys out of programs who aren’t on track the way they started about 15 years ago is one of the early indicators that things were getting more professional and gave weight to needing a more open portal. It’s crazy to think now about how many guys would be at a program for 5 years, never really do anything, and get a degree. Especially QBs.

You also can’t be too brazen about it because it will be used against you in recruiting. “You saw how they ran out player x at Washington after that knee injury. Here at Oregon we commit to you like a brother. You’ll always have a home here.” It doesn’t actually have to be true but an idiot 19 year old just has to believe it for 5 minutes. Until unlimited free agency is capped and there are public contracts in place it’s basically an open air weapons market.

Also this is why schools are hiring general managers now to manage the roster

LOL your Oregon example was exactly what I told my friend after he said to put this on the website. I said if UW ventured into that first, Oregon would be quick to go "Washington will stab you in the back at the first sign of trouble. But Uncle Phil would never do that to you at Oregon."
