Toronto manager John Schneider was not pleased with the crowd reaction at T-Mobile Park to George Springer getting hit on the knee by a 96 mph fastball from Bryan Woo and eventually having to leave the game in the seventh inning on Friday night.

Springer, who played for Houston during its championship seasons marred by a sign-stealing scandal, has regularly been booed by Mariners fans because of his association with the Astros at that time.

But Schneider felt the reactions in the crowd Friday night during Game 5 of the American League Championship Series went too far when Springer was hit by the fastball directly on his right kneecap. He limped to first base and eventually off the field getting jeered by the crowd.

“I know this is an awesome atmosphere to play in, and it’s really, really cool to play here, and I think the fans that were booing him should take a look in the mirror and understand what kind of player he is,” Schneider said. “I’ll stop there, because when a guy gets hit in the knee and is in obvious pain and have you 40,000 people cheering, not the right thing to do.”

Schneider said Springer had X-rays that came back negative and that he has a contusion on the knee. Springer will have further testing and treatment when the team returns to Toronto, he said.

Springer had an RBI double in the fifth inning that drove in Toronto’s first run.

“We’re going to (expletive) get after it Sunday,” Schneider said.
