THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

The oldest championship and perhaps the least important to America. That has changed because the PGA is well, the PGA but back in the day it was the British Open and the US Open was the Open. Tom Watson won 5 British Opens and was always considered a little bit less than the guys that won the other Majors. Tom won 2 Masters and a US Open
Jack and Tiger won 3 each giving them three career Slams. Faldo won three
But its a big deal now. I think we get a less known winner. More JJ than Scottie or Rory

Rory has a chance to have an all time memorable year. Grand slam at Augusta, Open in his home country and a road Ryder Cup win where he goes 4-1 or something.
-
Will there be five calls to prayer during The Open this year?
TITTT.
-
He's won 75 million the last three years. Pretty easy to be a philosopher now
Soft and cooked

Scottie was bitching about the greens last week. On paper he should win like 6 of these with his game, but something tells me he won’t like the randomness at Open courses. Might take him awhile to win one like Phil.
-
One of the commentators pointed out that the last three years Scottie was always so cool and even keeled but not so much this year when the putts aren't dropping. Welcome to golf. Portrush is not linksy links. Has some high ball holes so Americans should do well
-
I've watched Scottie once this year. He looked pissed off and like he was yelling at his caddie
-
I get my golf news from Hardcore Caddyshack! Seriously.
Wish I had the time to get into it more, but, like Scottie, I have gone soft since having kids and for some reason try to spend time with them. However, unlike Scottie (and @HuskyBuck), I have not earned $75 million in the past three years at my job and cannot retire whenever I feel like work is impacting my family life.
-
True. If Bryson for instance was ever going to win an Open it would be this week.
-
Interesting fact: Jordan Spieth is number 1 in total strokes gained at The Open the last 10 years. Could he get back on the major wagon? Probably not.
Rory will be the sentimental favorite, but I’m not sure he’s mentally tough enough to handle the pressure of that combined with all the inevitable bad breaks you get playing links golf. If he does win, Northern Ireland may end up being a dry country by the time that celebration ends.
Hot take: Scottie misses the cut and spends an incessant amount of time complaining about the greens and course conditions.
I agree with you, @Bob_C. This is Bryson’s best shot to win The Open. The forecast looks pretty mild by UK standards, and Portrush sets up a lot better for him than most of the other Open courses. He hasn’t been very consistent lately, so I think it’s unlikely he gets the job done. I could see a similar situation to 2019 where a really good but not top 10 player like Shane Lowry gets it done. I like Fleetwood and Bob Macintyre.
I love The Open. It’s tied with the US Open as my 2nd favorite major. The Masters is my favorite by a wide margin, and the PGA is whatever. The time difference is shitty, so it looks like I’ll have some late nights and early mornings the next few days.

It is 5.4 miles from Royal Portrush Golf Club to Bushmills.
I like John Daly in this one.
-
-
That is so good. Also this.
-
-
If you're between clubs you can just hit it into the grandstand at most venues and have a shot
-
I just learned that Bryson has a degree in physics from SMU. Interesting.
-
Matt Fitzpatrick is in good form as the Brits say. 4 under after the 1st round is T-1 so far.
Phil 1 under
-
Lots of washed up or nearly washed up 40 something’s and 50 something’s at -1 or -2. Open has been kind to this type over the years.
Glover, Westwood, Sergio, Justin Leonard (lol), Phil, Zach Johnson, Rickie, Rose all -3 to -1.
-
Imagine being Stewart Cink and your one major is beating 59 year old Tom Watson
-
And Watson bogeyed 18 to setup that playoff.
-
That was so disappointing. I wanted Watson to pull that off.
-
Explains a lot, doesn’t it?
-
Prior to drinking 18 protein shakes a day, that was his whole schtick.
-
I'm just starting to follow players
This I believe is the first British Open I've watched since my mid-teens
-
Definetly won a US Am and maybe an NCAA ( can’t remember). Was becoming a top ten ish player when covid hit and that’s only when he got super jacked and started hitting it way past everyone. He was maybe a slightly above average distance driver previously. There’s a legit golfer under all this bravado.

Like Rory, if Bryson figures out his wedges he'll win plenty more
-
His swing is too robotic to be a good wedge player. Not that you have to have hands like Seve, but there has to be some semblance of feel, not everything is a math equation. I watch every one of his YouTube videos, and watching him hit woods and irons is unreal, but watching him hit partial wedges inside 120 yards is maddening. His swing is kinda weird in general, but on those shots, it just looks so awkward.
-
Tiger has videos where he says basically he just swings his arms for wedges. Takes some of the spin off.
I used to be proud to hit an LW 120 yards. Realized that was pointless and now max it out at like 90.
-
Yeah, the better I got, the more detrimental full swing wedges became. Ripping it back 20 feet looks cool, but if you land it hole high and rip it off the green, it becomes less cool.
-
Earlier today in my car I was pondering this question for you and @Bob_C
Bryson is 31 and has won two tourneys. Is it reasonably possible for golfers to hit their prime in their 30s? Gymnastics girls seem to hit their primes in their teens and tennis players in their mid-20s. Football players hit their prime in their mid-to-late 20s. What about golfers?

Watching right now. Eight names on the leaderboard, and I don't know any of them.
