Bend used to be a great place in the late 1990s-early 2000s. Then the rich, white Democrats started buying up property and the wealth gap is ridiculous.
Look at Bozeman for how this always ends for these small cities in great locations.
It still has a wonderful quality of life with some great public schools on our side of town. Our kids have thrived.
You can't stop progress in western towns with top tier outdoor recreational opportunities (skiing being at the top of this list). They almost all get overrun.
When I was going to HS in Park City it was still relatively unspoiled. Then the Olympics happened + late stage capitalism and the place is unrecognizable. Same goes for Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons.
Would I take 2000 Bend over 2025 Bend? Sure. But I'll take 2025 Bend over pretty much any other spot in the PNW for the amenities that are important to me- i.e., skiing, mt biking, fishing, lakes, good schools, MILFs, low crime, abundant beer, etc.

The Duttons won in the end.
Was just in Bend for several days for a wedding. I can do without it.
I'll play because I was tagged here.
Obviously you're not an avid skier.

Not anymore. Wifes knees are bad and skiing hasn't been a thing for a bit. Used to be!
I'd be happy to live in Ketchum, ID if I was a trust funder and didn't care about youth sports ball.
