Depends on range choke and what load of buck you are using. Federal Flight Control is the Shiz! The 8 pellet 00 low recoil load in my custom 870 cuts a ragged hole at 25 yards. I can wax someone with it way beyond that. 3 times that far easily. Pattern your gun with different loads. If I put a Winchester 12 pellet 2 3/4 inch magnum load 00 buck in that gun it might miss a silhouette at 25 yards completely. Different loads for different purposes. I like 00 and 000. Not big on smaller stuff except maybe inside the house. Know your gear and buy good stuff for serious use.

I have a good stash of the Federal Flite Control 8 pellet thanks to @chuck. He found a hell of a deal earlier in the year and poasted it in the gun thread in the wam.
