One of the big criticisms post-mortem on DeBoer's tenure at UW was the lack of recruiting that when combined with the Lake shortcomings created a massive gap for Fisch (or any coach) come the 2024 season. If you are of the opinion that hindsight highlights that DeBoer was never interested in staying at UW long-term, then a key part of this is that DeBoer 1) didn't recruit/develop players on the whole and 2) leveraged talent that he inherited to build the foundation of his success.
The harsh reality is that the balance of UW's roster last year was recruited by Petersen and Lake with a sprinkling in of true freshman from DeBoer's 2023 recruiting class and a few that he held onto as part of the 2022 transition class. The portal had some major hits in there but the idea that the portal was leveraged to build the roster isn't accurate at all (Penix excluded).
If anything, what we should be taking away from the 2023 roster was how important it is to develop your players in-house as well the importance of having upperclassmen on your roster … which BTW is what Fisch is looking to build up.
Easy way to look at this is what was the depth chart for UW's game vs Texas in the Sugar Bowl as an example:

Chat GPT TLDR:
TL;DR: A major criticism of DeBoer's tenure at UW is his lack of recruiting, which, combined with Lake's shortcomings, left Fisch with a tough situation for the 2024 season. DeBoer mainly relied on players recruited by Petersen and Lake, along with a few of his own recruits, rather than building the roster through the portal. The takeaway from the 2023 season is the importance of developing in-house talent and having strong upperclassmen, which is the approach Fisch is now focusing on. The Sugar Bowl depth chart highlights this disparity.
You have no idea the damage 25-3 Kalen DeBoer did to this program!
And, obviously, neither do you.
Really breaking new ground here.
Bottom line: DeBoer won.
Had he been retained we wouldn't be looking at this shitshow
Fisch hasn't won shit.
DeBoer doing a shitty job tonight.
Anyone but Fisch.
PGOS defense incoming
You guys are both fags and should get a room.
Not against oklahomo or vanderbilt. Are you actually fucking retarded?
Damn I check back in and @Tequilla has written something so long and dumb I check back out, crazy
Another totally fucking bullshit statement without a single shred of proof. That fucking dumbass lost to Vandy and Oklahomo. In other words he is shit as fuck. The end.
25-3, 113-15. Yeah, I’m the retard.
Fuck off, dumbass.
will someone please point out all the recruiting worries and concerns from January 13th and earlier?
How many recruits and transfers bailed after Boner took the Bama job and what would the roster look like if he stayed?
I knew Penix played more than 4 seasons, but I didn't realize he won 104 games for the overrated dumb Dutchman. What was I thinking?
This is an underrated point in a debate that we shouldn't even be having IMO.
Time to turn the page.
Huh?
What?
