MINNEAPOLIS, FOUR YEARS ONOn Memorial Day, it will be four years since George Floyd’s death and the ensuing riots. The riots raged for days, centered on Lake Street in south Minneapolis. So, four years later, how is that part of the city faring? My colleague Bill Glahn drove down Lake Street to see how things are going. The one-minute video below is the result.
Watch for a particularly poignant moment: the Minneapolis Police Department’s Third Precinct station came under attack by the rioters. Civic authorities ordered the police department to abandon the precinct station, so it was overrun and destroyed. The burned-out hulk has remained for four years. Today, there is a sign in front of what used to be the station house, saying that “Site cleanup begins Spring/Summer 2024.” It’s about time, but watching the video, you get the feeling that it may be too late:
