NE defense has been top ten per DVOA each of the last three seasons (#6, #5, #9) so it’s not like Steve failed out as defensive play caller (patriots didn’t name an official dc) and the dude has three Super Bowl rings as a position coach. You think that doesn’t sell well in living rooms?

Most of it is unknown. Neither of us have any idea what was going on internally with the Pats or what Mayo’s hiring process was.
The fact that Steve wasn’t picked, out of the entire universe of options Mayo had to find his guy, doesn’t mean Steve can’t coach.
New coaches usually hire their own guys. Fisch got fired/let go from his first two OC positions when the head coaches got fired, does that mean he sucked?
I know if I was following the GOAT I would not want anyone with his name lingering around. I would want a clean break.
What we do know is that the Pats’ defenses were decent to good the last three years (#6, #5 and #9 by dvoa) and Steve has a decade of nfl experience and four years calling defensive plays at the nfl level. Three super bowls as a coach.
We know Fisch coached with him in 2020 in New England. I’m not going to say trust the coaches but a lot of things that are unknown to us are known to Fisch. If Steve was incompetent or didn’t have the respect of the players Fisch would know.
