NIL vs QB Development

There’s got to be a balance between NIL dough versus QB development. Two examples. DJ Ukelele got himself paid at Clemson but looks shitty. Wants to get paid again in the portal. But, his draft stock has plummeted and thus his long term potential earnings, too.

Lincoln Kolsch took 500k more from tOSU. Don’t want to Doog too much but DeBoer and his system seem like a sure fire 1st Round machine. If Penix moves to Round 1 next year, wouldn’t it be worth a helluva lot more than 500k to be in this system? (tOSU produces a lot of QBs so maybe not the best comp but still)

    1) Penix will not go in the first round due to injury history.
    2) OSU gets QBs drafted.
    3) OSU just had a QB Heisman finalist.
    4) As noted OSU pays better than us and guaranteed money goes a long way in a violent game.
    5) He can transfer later.

Yes, UW has had one season that looks like a QB dream. Not saying it is ok to not expect KDB to compete against OSU for recruits, but the one scenario you bring up it seems pretty understandable to choose OSU.

Just because a random fuck on Twitter says Lincoln got $750k to go to OSU does not make it true

I agree with this. Everyone knows OSU has deep pockets but let’s assume each “big time” QB on the roster gets 750, thats 2.25 million wrapped up in three players when only one plays. The people fronting the money are rich not stupid. I could see a situation where the starting QB at OSU makes 750. That’s the deal. Kienholz is offered a legit shot at winning the job in his recruitment. If you win the job you get the pot. That would make for some fierce competition and assuming LK is a fierce competitor he thinks he can grab the ring. Just a guess.

Making each player on the roster go full on Squid Game sounds genius.

All fair points provided by all. I think on point 1 this is precisely why Penix came back as he likely graded way down the draft this year. If he demonstrates two healthy highly effective years, then he may very well play himself into round 1. As absurd as it sounds, Brock Purdy was a 7th round pick making all of the evaluators look stupid. Never underestimate NFL scouting/drafting stupidity. I think Purdy helps Penix. He’s gotta deliver next year in all cases.

The most important position in all of sports is quarterback. You just can't win without one. There are high school quarterbacks getting $7 million. Why is it unbelievable that a blueblood school with (until the rent comes due, apparently) one of the freest-giving donor bases in the country would put one-tenth that amount toward a backup who's an insurance policy toward being good at said most important position? There is stupid money being thrown around in NIL right now, and OSU is a top-5 school when it comes to that. Texas A&M's last class reportedly cost them over $30 million. If you're not spending at least 20% of that on the most important position, you're stupid.

I'm not saying that the tweet is true, but, as a wise poet once said, a world exists...

This seems relevant. I'm guessing this is how UW approaches it with no guarantee until they perform on the field versus TAMU which pays HS kids and causes locker room chaos
