At some point late in the season, every game is a playoff game, like the old college football where every game mattered.In the scenario you described, if Michigan loses to tOSU in the CCG, you could make the argument that Michigan's loss was on a neutral field and tOSU loss was at home therefore Michigan had a better loss even though it's the championship game.I

The SEC has gotten two teams into the CFP twice which probably wouldn't have been possible had they gone the best overall record thing. In the current conference format it should have been obvious it was frequently going to create situations like this year with weird tiebreakers between teams that never played each other.
