Realistically, you're OK leaving a record out for up to 24 hours with almost no dust accumulation. And a little dust is no big deal on a record, providing you have a decent record brush to remove it. The larger concern is oil, dirt and other grime that gets deeper into the grooves. If you're buying or inherit used records that weren't well cared for a Record Cleaning maching is essential. A Spin Clean is only about $80.00 and works like a champ. For stylus cleaning the Zero Dust polymer for about $40.00 is the best I've found to date.

You don't have this dust problem with 8 tracks.

A dust cover isn't exactly hi-tech or expensive. The question being why don't you have one in the first place?

Mine was lost back in the 60s, I think. Frankly I don't miss having one, but I am going to take Yellow's advice and leave them out for a little while. Although one or two I would never leave out.

It's important to take care of your records, but at the same time you don't need to be an OCD freak.

My dad took impeccable care of his records. I've got a lot of old "white jazz" albums (eg Benny Goodman) and piles of classical. At one point he put them all through some kind of chemical cleaning project which at the time I thought was going too far. But, 10 years ago I got a box of records by mail from a great aunt. These were in terrible condition. Still, some of them are OK if you don't mind some pops and skips now and again.

They are amazing. Not allowed anywhere near the upcoming all hip hop / rap tournament though.
