This is a rather Randian request for a handout.

Here's a better idea for both UW and Whoregon. Dissolve WSU and OSU entirely. Just get the fuck rid of them. Transfer [any] good departments to the flagship, and go from there. Benies? Glad you axed:

1. Less CUOG!
2. No more embarrassing shit rivalries. Apple Cup and Civil War are gone.
3. Even less space for marginal dipshits to get a piece of paper that says "College", and providing more HS-educated labor for the workforce.
4. Less CUOG!!
5. More money all around for everything for each school.

This would be analogous to Stalin's purges ... rid the landscape of that which is least desirable and better allocate limited resources.

They certainly haven't beat them on the field anytime recently.

Eh, probably not. I tend to lump the Pac 12 like this:

Stanford
Cal

UCLA (debatable whether there is a space above them)

Washington/USC (Trojans would argue they're better than UW; they are more selective and tend to rank higher, but Washington is better at research productivity)

Arizona, ASU, Oregon, WSU, OSU, Utah, Colorado (the Buffs might argue they are right above this group, but NOFC)

And, frankly, there's no real distinction between those schools in the last category. Each one of them is good at this or that. They each have decent, but hardly selective, admission standards, and none of them research like Washington, which punches above its pedigree weight and researches almost but not quite like Cal, which really is the conference leader in that particular category, even over Furd.

There is an argument putting Cal over Stanford, but Furd is so rich and so hard to get into and has burnished its brand so effectively that it claims top spot. On research contributions and academic productivity, Cal is tuff to beat ... by anyone anywhere, much less in our now shitty conference.

Washington is fairly new to the game of selectivity, and even now is a full click below all the Cali schools, and two+ full clicks below Stanford.

As to your original question, no, I don't think Oregon is a better school than WSU. I think it has two distinct advantages over CUOG! Mostly, it has more future upside. It broke away from the retarded state control board and now fund raises independently with its own board. It will soon, or eventually, be in the UW zip code from an endowment perspective (but not from a federal research grant perspective). The science project will help them expand and better communicate areas where Oregon is sneaky skrong, like genetic research. The main thing Oregon has over WSU is Oregon is not WSU. They are not CUOG!!!!!! They don't identify with being the family goof ball. Whether we? get it or like it or not, the culture there is different and much, much more aspirational. They don't have a natural big brother like UW to look up to like CUOG! does. CUOG! inferiority complex is permanent. Oregon thinks of themselves differently, and that's the first step to how you get from point A to B.
