We're not there yet....
Some of the areas that need to be cleaned up:
- Offensive play-calling
- QB play
- Pass Rush
- linebacker recruiting
- WR recruiting
I love Pete and he is moving in the right direction, however, the difference between being OK and winning NY6 games is "on the margin" stuff. You can't have a great defensive coordinator(which we do) and then not recruit pass rushers and expect to beat a NY6 type of team. EVERYTHING has to be elite. Competing for a national championship requires finding an edge against other staffs that can scheme, recruit and develop players just as well as we can. That means having ZERO holes. We know what are shortcomings are and until we fix them that means that we have to be content with not competing at an elite level.
If you want to compete for national championships then demand more. Demand more out of the coaches, the athletic department staff, the boosters, etc. However well we are doing now is simply not good enough to complete with Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, etc. Do we want to be close or do we want to actually win? We've been "close" for the past 4 years under Pete and we'll continue to be just "close" if nothing changes. Pete has done great things for our program and I LOVE that I am even able to rant about competing with Bama. Pete is a God but he can do better. I hope he knows it. If he doesn't than it's our job to remind him.

Problem 1) Mediocre coaches on staff. Lubick, Paopao, Bonapha, Gregory.
Problem 2) Pete's offense.
Until those problems are solved, PAC 12 titles are the ceiling. -
As I* said on Twatter, 15 miserable points, total, equaled four losses. That is not Dooging excuses, that is an outright indictment of the offense at all levels.
-
I'm not sure how 'close' we are
-
Weve been saying this for 3 years. Are we getting any closer? Not sure we are
-
We're getting closer. Look at this year's recruiting class.
Not saying everything will be corrected but having a mature defensive and offensive talent sure masks holes in coaching and schemes and other personnel.
Let's get to that talent point with 2-3 consecutive classes and then reassess. -

Imagine the talent level you could have without mediocre recruiters like the four mentioned above. Petersen is not serious about championship football until he starts swinging the sword more on his staff. Loyal to a fault is still a fault.animate said:We're getting closer. We just gotta get the right OKGs in there guys. The upcoming OKGs are much better than the current OKGs. Everybody says so.

He's not a god. He's a good coach. You can develop guys and teach them good fundamentals and all that. I saw that by the Boise CC game in his second year. The defense was coming along and it looked much better than anything since probably 2000. At some point, elite talent is needed. I really haven't had the time or will to follow recruiting much since 2015-2016, but clearly we aren't there yet. I keep hearing excuses, or that we'd better wait until next year, or 2020, or whenever. My favorite line is that Clemson took eight years to really get good. Really? It takes eight now? I thought it took five.
I can live with 12-2, 10-3, and 10-4 with two Pac 12 titles and a Party Bowl. That's not bad at all. But I want to do better and win national titles. I don't see the evidence that suddenly we're going to be one of the elite 0-2 loss teams year in and year out right now. -
Haskins vs. Browning abilities were one of the main difference and could be argued ended up costing us the game.
Get an elite QB and check back in. -

We aren't any closer than we were 2 years ago from today. I am hopeful that a QB without a noodledick arm, players who can rush the passer, and consistent offensive line will change that.
Right now we are a NY6 gatekeeper who is one of the better teams in the shittiest P5 conference, that is it. -
I’m starting to wonder if there is an inherent ceiling to our mindset and message, even with better recruits. This whole “grind, refine, compete “message seems to attract or create players who approach the game with the mindset of a professional accountant.
No killer instinct or passion. The problem with the idea of never getting too high or low is that you never get high. And you think the answer to everything is just executing more precisely. It’s not. Our punter isn’t going to be great just because he executes. Same with our field goal kicker. Same with our quarterback. They can be slightly better, but there is a ceiling based on talent. And I feel like even the whole team limits their ceiling, even when talented, with their mindset. We always look like we’re going through the motions. -
They look soft. OG dwags* think they play soft.
It's worse than the offense....or any other statistical analysis.
Charmin soft.

Our defense could be better but it’s good enough for NY6 wins. Our offense isn’t. And it’s both players and coaching. Recruiting on D has been great...recruiting on offense has been just good.
Now that the season is over it wouldn’t shock me to learn Lubbick and Hamden don’t get along and Lubbick is out...bet he was pissed when Peterman brought Hamden back and bet he got more pissed when the offense kinda sucked in season. Don’t blame him (or Peterman), but it needs improvement this offseason. Expect Eason will help, but he will need WR help and I expect him to have both a higher ceiling and more variability than we had this season. -
Petersen is soft.
