The gas pedal metaphor is supposed to be used as the opposite of coasting with a lead. You should use it like: "we were ahead 34-17 at halftime but instead of coasting we kept our foot on the gas."
But it doesn't make sense to use it in preparing for the game. What does that mean? You're going to drive to practice. Yeah, keep your foot on the gas...
