Back when the game was in its infancy, the phrase "moving the chains" sprung from the practice of using slaves to mark down and distance. One stood chained to the other 10 yards apart. This was to ensure that they didn't run away while everyone else was focused on the game.
I'm shocked at the ignorance here. How whitewashed are the history books in Utah? -
