Mack Brown retired on the job after the '05 title and almost coasted his way to another in '09. The Longhorns program has been an embarrassment since Colt McCoy went out of the Rose Bowl with that injury, but even if he hadn't the foundation had rotted BADLY.
And recruiting rankings are very predictive overall, but they are certainly imperfect, and there is no shortage of outliers at both the player and program level.
Oh, and Jimbo Fisher is a slightly more astute Mack Brown. -
