CTE doesn't have to cause it, but it could contribute. They are starting to go down some other avenues because athletes from many sports are starting to turn up with it.
I was reading the preliminary of a study that suggests inflammation could be a major contributor to it which would explain young kids who have been playing three sports since age six have a 65 year old brain by age 21. Athletes are always beat up no matter the age. -

I believe this started when it started coming to light that soccer players were turning up with it and they blamed it on heading the ball. When you really dig into it how often does a premier league player head a ball that has a ton of pace to it and it's less than 20 times a year. So, if we are saying it's only hits to the head and so few can cause it then a fist fight you had in middle school might mean you'll lose your cognitive function by 55.dnc said:

I've read something being studied at Cal that might tie a lack of sleep to it as well. The only time your brain heals itself is during deep sleep and since most people don't get the required 7-9 hours when you get a concussion and you stay on your normal 5-6 hour sleep routine you get to a place where you can pass the eval to get back on the field but the damage wasn't repaired at all.
It's really chinteresting and something I research a ton being so involved with the game and having two young sons that both want to play. Maybe Bobby Boucher's mom was right and da foosball is da devil. -
