We've only fired 2 crew coach's in the past 30 years, both for the Women's team. Eleanor McElvaine was a train wreck in the early 2000's and ran the program into the ground. Ernst was a great women's coach in the 1980's before taking over the Men's team from 1988- 2007. He had a lot of strengths and a lot of weaknesses as a Men's coach but did win a couple of NT's (a more elite coach like we have now would have won far more). In 2008 he went back to coaching the women's team and did OK I guess, but probably wasn't the best fit long term. He did do some 'fat shaming' and it probably was called for but it's all about the messaging.
