Numbers, Going Forward, This Class, Etc.

One interesting thing going on right now is a discussion of numbers. Especially after Pete's presser yesterday, it sounded a bit like we are expecting some more guys to leave.
At present, if two of our guys enter early (Vita, Gaskin, Greg, Kaleb), we are currently full given that we take Eason and Kyler. However, given what Pete said and our roster, I expect we might add 3-4 more dudes, depending.
Here are our numbers for next year (without Vita and Gaskin; adding in Eason and Gordon) and I'll bold the guys I think are in line for couch sales. I also have listed next to the numbers, the average amount of scholarships per starter (i.e., we have 4 RBs and generally start 1, so that's a 4; I listed WR as 2.5 and TE as 1.5 starters to make it make sense).
QB (6; 6): Browning, DBG, Eason, Haener, Yankoff, Sirmon
RB (4; 4): Ahmed, Pleasant, McGrew, Newton
WR (12; 4.8): Dickey, Baccelia, Fuller, McClatcher, Pounds, Chin, Jones, Bynum, Cook, Lowe, Osborne, Spiker
TE (7; 3.5): Sample, Neal, Bryant, Kizer, Warren (H-Back), Otton, Culp
OT (6; 3): Adams, McGary, Burleson, Hilbers, Kirkland, Mele
OG (6; 3): Sosebee, Roberts, Wattenburg, Bainivalu, Ale, Curne
C (3; 3): James, Harris, Norgy
DT (10; 5): Bowman, Gaines, Johnson, McCoy, Scrempos, Onwuzrike, Bynum, Liu, Taimani, ZTF
BUCK (4; 4): Potoa'e, Rice, Bowman, Tryon
SAM (4; 4): Bartlett, Williams, Ngata, Kaho
MIK (4; 4): Beavers, Manu, Eifler, Sirmon
WIL (3; 3): BBK, Wellington, Tafisi
CB (9; 3): Miller, Dotson, Bryant, Joyner, Murphy, Molden, Taylor, Gordon, Hampton
S (5; 2.5): McIntosh, Rapp, Gilchrist, Love, McKinney
P/K (2): Whitford, Soderberg
That is 85 right there. With 9 guys who could sell couches.
As such, I think it's going to be pretty plain that we have room to play with in January.
So from looking here the scholarship per starters numbers organize like this:
QB - 6
DT - 5
WR - 4.8
OLB - 4
ILB - 3.5
TE - 3.5
CB - 3
OL - 3
S - 2.5
So, where do you think we might look in the Jan period?
One is obvious to me: S.
Outside of that, I could see us trying to add special guys at DT, BUCK, ILB and OL.
Who would be the guys?
S - This is tough. Irvin is the only decent player left and he's going to USC unless there's a miracle.
DT - Again, it's kind of hard to tell right now who we would go after, but if we could get a guy who could play immediately we would.
BUCK - Jeremiah Martin is obviously the big target here. I think he could start next year, basically.
ILB - I think this is a lower priority, but I expect us to push for Tuliaupupu who would not redshirt (Sirmon and Tafisi will).
OL - This is, again, hard to completely tell who we will be after, but it wouldn't surprise me if we got in on someone.
I will be twitter stalking all weekend to try to understand this. Add your thoughts below!

What about the dude from Temple

I’d add Soderberg as a couch seller with some mysterious leg injury leading to a medical retirement ...
I wouldn’t close the door on us finding a grad transfer or two -

You really think Sosebee could sell the couch? He lost playing time late in the year but he still started 8 games and played in 12. I think he will stick around. I’m not a fan of his but I don’t mind the depth he provides as an experienced backup.

Pete might reserve a spot for a walk-on -
He needs to get down to 300 pounds and improve his footwork. He might be decent back up. I hope Kaleb comebacks. He has the most to gain in terms of draft status next year.Edwin_Bambino said:You really think Sosebee could sell the couch? Chin, Scrempos and Manu are useless as tits on a boar hog. GTFO losers.

I don't get it
-
Are we? Really not trying to get a kicker?
-
A few thoughts/questions:
- Where is Justiss Warren?
- Do we have a realistic shot at Jeremiah Martin (the photo with Kawasaki and Bhonapa...yeesh)?
- Some of the guys you put in bold are likely on the Jeff Lindquist plan (i.e., might as well just ride it out).
- ONE MORE: Eason? Really?
Thanks for putting this together.
-
I wouldn't be shocked by a grad transfer with Sosebee, though I think it's more likely from James. It's hard to know exactly what the feeling is like in the OL group, but I've heard Huff wants to take 4 this year and it wouldn't surprise me if a guy like Sosebee weren't really attractive to a school like Montana State. He could go and start from the get-go. Next year, I think our Gs are going to be Wattenberg and Bainivalu. We shall see.WeakarmCobra said:

Hilbers sucks ass. Too bad we haven't recruited enough bodies to cut him loose as well.
-
Warren is listed at TE or H-Back. I think he stays and plays there. He looked good pushing people out of the way.Passion said:A few thoughts/questions:

Do we have a realistic shot at Martin? Well - I don't think so. But I think we are finishing 2-5 on big fish and I thought we would go 0-5. So, that's a thing.
After Friday, when signing period closes, I will have something much more comprehensive on who is still available and who we might be after. -
I would prefer him to LEAVE because he sucks, but I bet he sticks around because of your reasoning. He has experience and has started games. The coaches will make someone beat him out.Edwin_Bambino said:You really think Sosebee could sell the couch? He lost playing time late in the year but he still started 8 games and played in 12. I'm not a Sosebee fan by any means, but I don't think we have enough depth where we can safely afford to lose him. He's not great, but there's a reason he started games last season over some other guys. If an injury or two happens, we'll likely end up with a worse player than Sosebee out there if he's gone and I'd like for all our incoming Freshman OL to RS.
Sosebee is likely our 6th or 7th Lineman next season
I'm fine with every one else you mentioned selling their couch though. -

Oh and @Passion - yes really on Eason.
Also - have heard some rumors that USC will have staff shake-up (I think we will, too) after the bowl. This may be why their DL recruits haven't signed. -

I'm hearing he's a real disappointment and needs to LEAVE.

I'd be really surprised if Sosebee leaves.
I'd be somewhat surprised if James leaves just because if Nick Harris doesn't work out at Center for some crazy reason or gets hurt I think he'd still be in front of the Viking. He's a Sr. and I think they have plenty of room scholarship-wise.
I expect Lenius to grad transfer out and Manu to transfer out. Burleson could transfer out, but if I was him I'd wait until I had my undergraduate degree (don't think football is going to be his career...). Dotson may grad transfer just to get PT...heck I half expect him to head to the Beavs and maybe even move back to RB there.
I'm sure I'm wrong but I'm still kinda surprised on the Eason talk...he just seems like he'd clash with Peterman. But it would be sweet. I assumed Sirmon and Yankoff came in and one would win the backup job and play next year just to stagger their eligibility.
I half expect Scrempos and/or Neal to take medical retirements...they have been hurt most of their time at UW.
I think/hope Rice sticks around...if Potoa'e adds another 10-15 lbs in the offseason I think he'll move inside (esp if Gaines leaves) and Rice competes with Ryan Bowman and Joe Tryon at Buck.
As far as recruiting, I think the staff will start a bunch of 2019 recruiting to get their foot in the door early with the top recruits, and full-court press the couple we are still after (Irving/Martin/Aashari Crosswell(?)/Cravens(?)) after Gordon and Trembly decide.

On James, he could grad transfer to be able to play somewhere for a year. Sure, Harris could get hurt. Even then, I'm not sure he'd be our second choice. Again, I don't know for certain.
Feel the same on Sosebee. I'd be a bit surprised, but crazy things happen.
What I do know is this - Huff thinks a lot of those guys suck and should move on. So, I wouldn't be surprised if one or two left.
Croswell has to be a guy we will look at. I think that's a good call. -

I'm hearing he's a real disappointment and needs to LEAVE.

Passion getting shredded in this thread

Only Swaye gets the dark side of my humor...perhaps that says something about me.

Some key dates on Skinny...
UGA plays OU on 1/1 - if they win, they play on 1/8
UGA's winter semester starts 1/4, which is a Thursday.
Skinny could easily not show for class those days and still be eligible for a 1/8 game.
UW's winter Q starts 1/3. I doubt Skinny is ready by then, but we shall see.
The KEY date—in my opinion—is 3/26 which is when UW's Spring Q starts.
