Gene Stallings (who was at Texas A&M as AD iirc) called a emergency meeting of Texas/OU/Okie and the rest of the Big 12 schools and made a passion plea to "stick together, we are the SWC, Texas tough football" speech and it somehow worked as the Big 12 stayed whole.
The ironic fuck you was one year later Texas A&M bolted for the SEC.
