Fact is, Uruguay has been solidly Commie for years. A "popular front," if you will, of left-wing parties has controlled the Uruguayan parliament for years. Thirteen years, in fact.
An out-and-out ex-revolutionary and actual Communist, Jose Mujica, was the country's president for two terms. He legalized drugs, did some other socialist stuff and things haven't gone to hell there. A Socialist is President now, with a Communist as their Vice-President. Also, same sex marriage (as mentioned) and abortion. Again, this is not really the profile of one of "the most Catholic and Conservative nations in the America’s [sic]." 40.7% of Uruguayans identify as "unaffiliated," one of the highest levels of non-affiliation with the Catholic Church in Latin America.
Yet the Uruguayans have one of the best economies in South America, and are one of only two South American countries whose bonds are investment-grade.
