    Taking a dive is a great way to help the team. If you get some contact and the ball gets away from you, you make sure to go down to increase the odds of getting a free kick because goals are rare.

    The guys that do it all the time when there isn't contact get bad reputations and are usually carded/fined. Also, they end up subjecting themselves to retaliation fouls.

    It isn't like diving in the NBA where all you get are free throws. Goals are rare.
