A better chart would show years back to 1990.

I give Obama credit. He did as much damage to the Democratic party as he did to America. He's probably set up a long conservative run.

When Howard Dean was chair of the DNC he made it a point for the party to compete in every state, every district. It led to the Dems making substantial gains in 2006 and 2008. His successors moved away from that policy, instead focusing on fund-raising and national-level policy and races.

And what happened? The party's half-dead. There's no "bench" of up-and-comers in many states, hence no opportunity to flip districts. The problem isn't just that Dem voters are more concentrated in urban areas. That's always been the case and most likely always will be until the next great political re-alignment.

Obama does own this problem since it was his DNC that presided over the electoral disaster in 2010, which led to GOP control of many statehouses in swing states, which led to an ALEC-led movement at the state level to gerrymander the fuck out of congressional and legislative districts - to the point where, in Wisconsin, In 2012, the Republican Party received 48.6% of the two-party statewide vote share for Assembly candidates and won 60 of the 99 seats in the Wisconsin Assembly. In 2014, the Republican Party received 52% of the two-party statewide vote share and won 63 assembly seats. That gerrymander was recently ruled unconstitutional and the fate of this court case will probably also determine a great deal about what this country looks like 20 years from now.

As long as people continue to believe that land matters more than voters, the system as a whole will become less "small d" democratic and less representative of the will of the people. If the trend gets out of hand, there will be a significant political crisis, if you don't think that the Republic is experiencing one already.

The problems are more with the structure of the party as a whole. But he didn't do anything to fix it
