The people elected him because he's black, let's be real. Hillary ran on "just like Obama" and lost to Trump. Bernie was the ultimate not business as usual, tough on Wall Street, liberal healthcare candidate and he couldn't even beat Hillary. There was no mandate and the democrats didn't want change.
