USA Today: Is Petersen's reputation for big game mastery a myth or fact?

He's a really good coach, but it's stupid. Saban and Meyer aren't lauded for their big game mastery, they are just considered great coaches. It's some bullshit perpetuated by the fact Petersen coached at Boise State and won some big games. Urban Meyer did that and would have continued to that if he stayed at Utah. It's not really any different.DerekJohnson said:
UW is a possible new power program. We blew out the other team in 10 of 13 games. Plungered them. Alabama is Goliath but we aren't fucking David.
If we win, it's not because Petersen recruited and developed the players into a top flight unit. Maybe by an off chance we win on some trick play or a fake punt or FG, but the reason we will be in the game is because we played a sound game. The media sucks with their bullshit stories they create. -
If Petersen is a big game coach we beat USC this year.
He is a very good coach, but if he was particularly good in big games we win that one. We should have won it as it was. -
Teams rarely go undefeated. That game wasn't a well coached game imo, but I bet Ohio State fans feel that way any time they lose. Alabama too.Mad_Son said:If Petersen is a big game coach we beat USC this year.

Saban has one undefeated season in his career. Urban Meyer has two, one with Utah and one with Ohio State barred from post season play. Pete Carroll had one.
Everyone loses sometimes. The whole season was on the line the last two games and we destroyed the opponent. Those were just as big, if not bigger games than USC. -
This is all you really needed to say.RoadDawg55 said:

The point is not about losing a game. It is about losing a big game. If Peterson were a big game coach we would have beat USC.RoadDawg55 said:

So outside of Gil Dobie, there has never been a big game coach in the history of college football?Mad_Son said:

What makes Gil Dobie a big game coach? I know he never lost but what big games did he even coach? My point echos roaddawg's about how good coaches just win games because they are good coaches. You look at the best bowl records of all time and you see those coaches were always putting together good seasons.UWhuskytskeet said:

If Petersen was some big game specialist we would have beaten USC. We didn't because he is not a big game specialist. He is just a good coach who wins most of his games but occasionally loses... not sure how my statements have been confusing.... -
The contention of the article is Petersen win games with less talent after a long layover. We played USC with a normal week.
-
WSU was a big game because the North division was on the line.
CU was a big game because the conference championship was on the line.
What was at stake against USC? We lost and it didn't really change anything.

Gil Dobie never lost a single playoff game as coach at UWMad_Son said:

I watch ESPN over and over...Chris Petersen ran one hook and ladder and beat Oklahoma. That is the only reason they won.
-
This is retarded. If their one loss was against Oregon, Stanford, WSU, or Colorado, you would have said the same thing.Mad_Son said:If Petersen is a big game coach we beat USC this year.

The team is not hoing to go undefeated every year. Is Meyer not a big game coach because he lost to Penn State? -
Tuiasosopo never lost a game as head coach eitherUWhuskytskeet said:

Yes. Meyer is simply a great coach. He is not some big game specialist.bananasnblondes said:

USC was a surging conference opponent. Gameday was in town. The view at the time was win the game and make the playoffs or lose the game and be on the outside looking in, at best. If Michigan and clemson hasn't also lost our one loss record would compare les favorably. It's easy to look back and say we made the playoff so it doesn't matter but at the time it was a big game.Dardanus said:WSU was a big game because the North division was on the line.

So why doesn't WSU or Colorado count as "big games" since if we knew if we lost either one we had 0 shot at the playoffs. The feeling at the time of the USC game was we needed to win but still would have a shot if we lost.Mad_Son said:

I'm fine with the opinion he's not a big game coach, but the logic that because he lost the USC doesn't make him one os flawed.
Also fuck game day that shouldn't be a reason. -
WSU and Colorado count as big games.... what's your point? Petersen is a good coach who wins most games. If he was just some sort of big game specialist we would have beaten USC too because that was a big game and any losses would have been to lesser opponents. A big game specialist would have a record that more closely resembles rich rod's. I am not claiming that is what he is so no need to get worked up over that too.CuntWaffle said:

Also if your point is that even a big game coach can lose a single big game in their career then you are retarded for even engaging in this discussion. We lost the USC game due to coaching incompetence, not getting unlucky despite some impeccable game plan. -

As always I think back to my youthful ward, Bobby Bowden, who said that as far as he could tell it was a big game if they lost it. Said that they had to win a boatload of little games though to get there.
That was when he was searching for a National Championship and Miami was in his way -
Petersen is one of the top 5 coaches in the country.
He develops players, and consistently wins.
About the only coaches I would trade him for would be Saban or Meyer. -
Why couldn't we beat Oklahoma State? Couldn't even get the team up for that game and laid a giant steaming turd instead.

Good point, if you can't get up for the Who Gives a fuck Cactus Cock Bowl how can you expect to get up for the Playoffs?El_K said:Why couldn't we beat Oklahoma State? Couldn't even get the team up for that game and laid a giant steaming turd instead.

He wanted that season over. That was not only my least favorite Husky team of all time but I'm pretty sure that Pete would say that was his least favorite team. EVER. Lots of talent and expectations but the stink of Sark all over every facet of that crews mindset and prep. The band-aid was pulled off that year and the healing began in 2015. I get a gagging feeling just thinking about 2014. Try again. Then LEAVE!!!!!El_K said:I can still see the steam rise off that turd in Arizona
