NCAA and each school make huge coin off guys like McCaffrey in bowls and when the marquee player decides to chase his own check, then the attendance/viewership declines.
The only people that watch the minor bowls are the fans, alumns of the schools participating and Dudes that just want to watch Football. Whether the Star Player isn't in the Chicken Bowl matters not to it's ratings. Because other than the above, Noone cares anyway. -

It's not really anything new. Clowney basically sat out his senior year. When he did play he went through the motions.
