I really do think Fleck is the next super star coach and there isn't much out there. Oregon probably fucks this up and hires the Boise State guy that can't even win the WAC.

Here is what I know about football having played and coached for over 20 years now; there are thousands of great coaches of the game of football out there. If it were all in a vacuum and rosters were equal there are hundreds of Meyers and Sabans out there at all levels.

I have a lot of friends that either tried or are still trying to make it as college coaches. What fans don't get is that the average college football coach is the poorest guy in the room. The manager at Kinkos makes more than 90% of college football coaches. The one thing that drives almost all of them isn't school pride or improving the lives of young men. It's flat out money. Think about the exponential raises at the top 1% in the last twenty years. UW was the first college to give a seven figure contract and it wasn't that long ago.

The way every college AD hires the "next big thing" and the way they pay them is fucking retarded. You have to hire someone that is fucking addicted to winning. Meyer and Saban would skull fuck everyone they know for minimim wage. They will be that way until the day they die. When you hire a guy that has been working his whole career to "make it" he isn't going to sleep in his office and live on a plane to see recruits. He is fucking rich and he isn't inconveniencing himself for anything. You already hear the reports of how lazy Slingblade is as a recruiter, it's because they paid him $23 million to move home.

Fleck is a freak of a human. When you hear him talk about his son dying and how he does everything for him you realize someone else is driving the car and that guy is never going to stop.

That is the one thing every great college coach has in common with no exceptions. Woody Hayes didn't throat punch someone after twenty years because he was mad at his defense. He fucking hated losing.

Interesting poast. I can probably buy in that there are thousands of great coaches out there. I also know a few dudes who have made it as coaches.

But to me the difference is how they are as leaders. Do you equate the hatred of losing as resulting in their great leadership? Saban and Meyer are great leaders and also hate losing. Does the hatred of losing drive the leadership? Or vice versa?
