Now go get PJ Fleck so we can Row the Boat up to Lake Washington and whip some Doog ass again!
It's going to be fun watching you slowly give up...;)
I really do think Fleck is the next super star coach and there isn't much out there. Oregon probably fucks this up and hires the Boise State guy that can't even win the WAC.
It'll be fun revisiting this prediction in 3-5 years.
How many "super star" coaches do you think there are in college football who would be considered a HOME RUN hire at any school in the country?
Saban. Meyer. Harbaugh. And, yes, Petersen.
We will see on Swinney after his QB is finished at Clemson.
Texas — with all its resources and built-in advantages — just hired the Next Big Thing whose team will miss the Top 25 and finished in the middle of the pack in a mid-major conference.
LSU, for God's sake, looked at what was available and chose to promote Ed Fucking Orgeron when they figured out Tom Herman was going to Texas.
The Huskies got lucky Chris Petersen was ready to leave Boise and UW was a job he was willing to take.
Oregon's chances of being just as fortunate are very, very small.
Good recruiter who will bring in a shit ton of talent.
So Les Miles didn't win enough (i.e., lost 5 in a row to Alabama) because he and his staff didn't recruit on a big-time level?
Meathead coaches who live off their reputation as lights-out recruiters aren't usually the last ones standing, but time will tell in Baton Rouge.

Maybe you missed the point.
He will lose.
But LSU can't afford to hire a lights out coach ... the fucking state is broke.
Once oil comes back, they will be flush with cash and ready to rumble.

Here is what I know about football having played and coached for over 20 years now; there are thousands of great coaches of the game of football out there. If it were all in a vacuum and rosters were equal there are hundreds of Meyers and Sabans out there at all levels.
I have a lot of friends that either tried or are still trying to make it as college coaches. What fans don't get is that the average college football coach is the poorest guy in the room. The manager at Kinkos makes more than 90% of college football coaches. The one thing that drives almost all of them isn't school pride or improving the lives of young men. It's flat out money. Think about the exponential raises at the top 1% in the last twenty years. UW was the first college to give a seven figure contract and it wasn't that long ago.
The way every college AD hires the "next big thing" and the way they pay them is fucking retarded. You have to hire someone that is fucking addicted to winning. Meyer and Saban would skull fuck everyone they know for minimim wage. They will be that way until the day they die. When you hire a guy that has been working his whole career to "make it" he isn't going to sleep in his office and live on a plane to see recruits. He is fucking rich and he isn't inconveniencing himself for anything. You already hear the reports of how lazy Slingblade is as a recruiter, it's because they paid him $23 million to move home.
Fleck is a freak of a human. When you hear him talk about his son dying and how he does everything for him you realize someone else is driving the car and that guy is never going to stop.
That is the one thing every great college coach has in common with no exceptions. Woody Hayes didn't throat punch someone after twenty years because he was mad at his defense. He fucking hated losing.

So if LSU had been flush with cash this year, who would have ended up as coach?
Would Fisher or Herman been hired away from FSU/UT?

Bingo. Saw it yesterday with Meyer. He's not driven by the wins. It's the to his core last dying breathe hatred of losing that makes him (and all the great ones) have a singular focus of getting to his point A to point B and doing what ever it takes to make that happen.
Saban and Meyer wear it on their sleeves. Harbaugh and CP mask it well, but behind closed doors I bet it's a different animal.
This is a small point, but I think speaks to how CP is wired. He likes to play ping pong against all the recruits when they come visit. My guess is those kids think it's going to be a friendly little game. But as I understand it, when the game starts, Petersen flips his switch and his only focus and goal is to beat the piss out of the student athlete and win the game. It's that same mentality and drive he has when he's coaching football.
Now go get PJ Fleck so we can Row the Boat up to Lake Washington and whip some Doog ass again!

Interesting poast. I can probably buy in that there are thousands of great coaches out there. I also know a few dudes who have made it as coaches.
But to me the difference is how they are as leaders. Do you equate the hatred of losing as resulting in their great leadership? Saban and Meyer are great leaders and also hate losing. Does the hatred of losing drive the leadership? Or vice versa?

The hatred of losing drives everything. You either get on board or fuck off. The talent Saban and Meyer have ran off would be program changing to lesser programs/coaches.
Another example of Fleck. When he was hired at WMU he called all the current verbals and told them that if they wanted to play for the previous staff he had no interest in them. He only played the guys that bought in which resulted in most of their sitting while they won one game. He then went on to sign the highest rated recruiting class in MAC history and followed it up with an 8 win season. They sign an even better class leading into this year and sit at 12-0.
He won't even take a phone call until after their CCG from people trying to throw millions of dollars at him.
He isn't "the next big thing." He is already elite. Once the office matches the man he will be talked about with the big boys.
