Has the crack team of experts at Hardcore Husky verified the authenticity of this letter? I'm concerned it might be a fake.
The old timey prose seems to be consistent with the writing style of the middle 1800's. But, young Private Browning's comment about Col. Smith's "unit" having lost thousands of men in its last battle caught my eye. You see, typical command for a Civil War era Colonel would have been a regiment of 1,000 men give or take; and even allowing for the crude infantry tactics of the age and ensuing gruesome casualty numbers, it is unlikely that a unit of 1,000 soldiers could have lost "thousands" in one battle alone.
I think if you took this artifact to the guys on Pawn Stars, there's an 81% chance they are going to tell you it's phony. -
