I'm pretty sure this isn't the most popular team within each state but rather the most popular team from each state. Therefore you get the spite votes from everyone who hates BAMA, Jawjuh-, USC, etc.

UAB won bama because the neckbeards got all up in arms when Bear's kid shut the program down. apparently they wrote a bunch of strongly worded emails and thought that it would work.
somehow UAB got their shit program back and all the neckbeards rejoiced from their mom's basement "WE DID IT REDDIT!"
