Stockdale was a pretty cool guy. He gave a guest lecture at Berkeley in around 1988 for one of my classes. Don't recall his specific rank or duties in the Navy, but he was in the air the night those destroyers were supposedly attacked in the Gulf of Tonkin in 1964. He was pretty adamant that there was nothing there.
