The data shows that the middle class shrank from 38.8% of the population to 32% from 1979 to 2014. But the wealthy grew from 13% of the US population to 31.2%. The share represented by the working class and the poor plunged from 48.2% to 36.9%. On the whole, 63% of the population now counts as middle class or higher, up from 51.8% in 1979.
