Fireworks lit up the sky behind a collective, euphoric scream heard around Pullman.
It wasn't even a home game, but nearly every person in Pullman was glued to a TV set, watching as redshirt sophomore quarterback Luke Falk dropped back to pass. He evaded a UCLA lineman and fired a bullet downfield towards redshirt junior Gabe Marks, who was back along the baseline amidst double coverage.
The ball seemed to hover in the air for an eternity. Some couldn't look, others' eyes were as large as saucers with hands covering their mouths or clasped tight in prayer.
When the ball got to Marks, he caught it, held on through the pass inference and came up with the ball. The roar reached a crescendo more than 1,000 miles north of Rose Bowl Stadium. Couches were burned in the street, the fight song—sung slightly off-key—erupted from house after house and music was played until the early hours of the morning.
"People haven't been giving us respect until they absolutely had to," Marks said. "And now they have to."
Uhh, yeah dude. People don't typically respect teams that lose to Portland State.
