Main takeaway is that it is indeed J smith being a retard that is holding this offense back. O line was serviceable, but Boise juco was keying on everything we did. The play calling was waaaay too predictable.
Didn't realize, but we only ran 3 (!) play action plays. So we did a bunch of pre snap motion, but once the ball was snapped it was either a straight up pass or straight up run.
Smith (and Pete for enabling this disaster), I hate you!

Given all the resources UW has, I don't understand why we have to settle for a second rate OC. I blame Peterson much more than I blame Smith.

Don't you need the threat of running the ball in order to use play action successfully?doogville said:This breakdown is excellent

I know you're being sarcastic, but one of the reason we couldn't run the ball is because the safeties were crashing at the first hint of run.Hippopeteamus said:

The Smith effect:

I was not being sarcastic, from everything I have heard Boise was daring Washington to run the ball. Maybe that is not really correct and play action would have worked, but I am curious to know what happened on the three play action passes?

We should take a look at that Chip Kelly guy. He might make a good head coach in waiting.DerekJohnson said:Given all the resources UW has, I don't understand why we have to settle for a second rate OC. I blame Peterson much more than I blame Smith.

JS.fs may be OC in name but our HC is a former OC and Pease was Pete's OC for a couple years. That's too much experience to lay everything on Smith but like DJ said Smith was a bad hire, arguably the only one, but he is the weak link and over his head. I have to believe if the O doesn't improve Smith will be gone and if he isn't that is a huge red flag for Coach Pete going forward.
It's not like we cant hire a stud OC like Mr. EWU and within 2-3 years of success he can parlay that into a P5 job not named Vandy or WSU. I am absolutely sold on the D/ST staff so I can't imagine Pete sticking with beaver boy or he is risking the path of the past 2 Boise coaches. LIPO, if Pete can't turn this shots how around I'm not sure who can? IMO UW is still a buy LT with Peterman. -
It is hard to run play action when you only have 29 rushing yards
-
The idea behind play action is to get the safeties to crash (someone said that above) and they already were. Not sure why you would need play action given that the middle of the field was wide open all night anyway.greenblood said:It is hard to run play action when you only have 29 rushing yards

I am starting to come around to this opinion. It makes me want to swallow a bullet.DerekJohnson said:Given all the resources UW has, I don't understand why we have to settle for a second rate OC. I blame Peterson much more than I blame Smith.

In another article if you go to the link, here was a quote Pease made about CP/Boise offensive philosophy when they were there.
"When asked about it in 2012, Jeff Choate (then the RB coach for Boise State) made a cogent observation about what makes Boise's offense so good. He said, "We run plays, we don't have an offense. It's what we do." It seems the lack of a system is exactly the kind of system that Chris Petersen likes to run."
This is the canary in the coal mine for me. After 15 games, our philosophy on offense looks just like this. It's looks like we are just throwing everything against the wall and see what sticks (which so far looks like nothing).
I am skeptical this can work in a power 5 conf. every week, but CP needs to get his guys in there first.

Here's a better version of that quote with more context, from the 2010 SmartFootball.com article.Boise State’s linebacker coach, Jeff Choate, once told me at coaching clinic two years back, “We run plays, we don’t have an offense. It makes it difficult to defend.”
If only they were running plays like 2008 now.

Great job.
Also, get a fucking avatar.
If you have any self-respect you will re-invent yourself as 'godawgstFS' and your avatar will be a mini-helmet (to signify your dm.cFS moronic ability to confuse a mini-helmet for a real helmet):
